What actually makes a local business website convert

Design matters, but it's not the point. The point is the phone ringing and the booking diary filling up. These are the things that reliably turn a visitor into a customer for a local business.

1. One obvious next action

Decide the single thing you most want a visitor to do — call, book a table, request a quote — and make it the loudest element on the page. One primary button, repeated as the visitor scrolls. Competing buttons split attention and lose the click.

2. Click-to-call and tap-to-book

Most people browsing a local business are on their phone. Your number should be tappable, and any booking or enquiry should take seconds, not a long form. Every extra field costs you leads.

3. Proof you can be trusted

Reviews with a name and location, real photos of your work or premises, years in business, and any relevant accreditation (Gas Safe, CQC, NICEIC). People buy from businesses that feel real and local.

4. Fast and mobile-first

If a page is slow or awkward to use on a phone, visitors leave before they read a word. Lightweight pages, readable text, and tap targets big enough for a thumb do more for conversion than any animation.

5. The basics, instantly findable

Opening hours, location with a map, what you do and where you cover. If someone has to hunt for whether you're open or whether you serve their area, they'll hunt on a competitor's site instead.

A quick self-check

Open your current site on your phone. Can you call in one tap? Is it obvious what you do and where? Can you see a recent review and a real photo without scrolling for ages? If any answer is no, that's the first thing to fix.
